When I heard about the class going on an outing I was so excited. Just then I wondered where we were going to, and Mrs. B said were going to the Waterfront and going on a pirate boat to Robben Island. We were going on Thursday but then the weather had to rain so the outing was postponed to Tuesday. We had to wait for Tuesday and it finally came I was so excited. We went to the Waterfront and got on the Jolly Roger, a pirate boat. Wait I’m going too fast! Let me slow down a little bit! They gave us a show. Oh wow. They were like real pirates. After that we went back to class.

Our Senior Citizens project

I interviewed Rolf. When you have read about my project, please fill in the comment box and tell me about a senior citizen or grandparent that you know. Thanks

Rolf as a small child
Hi my name is Rolf, I live on the Main Road in Fish Hoek. My dad was a health inspector and my mom stayed at home with us. When I was little there were the same jobs as today. I only played with bicycles and cars. I loved swimming.

Rolf’s Primary School Days
When I went to school they were strict and if you were misbehaving they would smack your bottom, I went to school in Fish Hoek. I always walked to school, and we did the same subjects as today. We wrote in our books with a dip pen and ink in an ink well. If we were naughty we would get a smack with a cane. We had lots of homework. On the playground we loved to played soccer!

Rolf as a teenager
When I was a teenager I wore jeans and T-shirts, I didn’t have a cell phone because
they weren’t invented. Our school didn’t even have extra-murals, so in my spare time
I played in the garden with my friends. In the evenings my family and I went for walks and I must say, visited my friends a lot. I went to the cinema on my fist date on when I was 16. I think a perfect date is when you see a movie and buy a hamburger. I used to listen to Elvis’s music. It was awesome! I have so many pictures of myself when I was a child. I loved to watch cow boy movies. My mom cooked a lot of stews and roasts when I was young.

How has South Africa changed since Rolf was a child?
When I was young it was quite strange because the whites were separated from the blacks. It was called Apartheid. There was very little crime in those days.

Does Rolf have any interesting information about his grandparents?
My grandfather owned a butcher shop in Kenilworth.

What advice can Rolf give to help us in our lives?
Play a lot of sport and listen to advice from your parents.

Any other interesting stories Rolf could tell us?
When I was young I loved to camp, play in the sand and look at the waterfalls.

I watched Fish Hoek Primary School being built.
